One culprit making your internet connection slow in Windows 10: Windows Update Delivery Optimization

In terms of Windows Update, Windows 10 has something up its sleeve that's never has been used before. Traditionally, the updates for any Windows device were delivered directly from Microsoft's Windows Update servers. To facilitate efficiency in the Windows 10 update process, Microsoft has created 'Windows Update Delivery Optimization'. Here's what it is- Windows 10 computers and devices can connect to each other and get updates not only from Microsoft’s dedicated servers but also from other Windows 10 devices that have already downloaded parts of the updates. Windows Update Delivery Optimization is also active for any apps you purchase and download from the Microsoft Store.

Windows Update Delivery Optimization has two settings:

    • Setting 1 allows Windows 10 to share files with other computers on your local network only.
    • Setting 2 allows Windows 10 to share files with other computers on your local network and with other computers on the internet.
Delivery Optimization downloads the same updates and apps that you get through Windows Update and the Windows Store. Delivery Optimization creates a local cache, and stores file that it has downloaded in that cache for a short period of time. Depending on your settings, Windows then send parts of those files to other PCs on your local network or PCs on the Internet that are downloading the same files.

Now it's a good thing, right? Yes and no. It makes provide you faster update than conventional method but it can also eat up your precious internet bandwidth. Especially it will create a problem for limited volume internet user. Even though Microsoft assured us Delivery Optimization won’t automatically download or send parts of updates or apps to other PCs on the Internet if it detects that you're using a metered connection. But you have to set your internet connection as Metered first in order to do so. This settings is lies under Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Advanced options. Then use the toggle under Set as metered connection to set your Wi-Fi connection as metered.
