What exactly Apple HomeKit is and how it works
The idea of connecting every electronic appliance at your home is not a new one. I am sure that you must have heard the name of Google Home or Amazon Alexa/Echo by now. You might have owned an Apple TV at your home. But interestingly Apple HomeKit is not that much familiar till now. The main reason behind this is there is no such device named 'Apple HomeKit' in the market right now. HomeKit is Apple's attempt to bring all your smart devices together into a single ecosystem. Since the inception of iOS 10, Apple is also allowing you to control all your HomeKit-supported devices through a single app. iOS 8.1 or newer is also supported but you can't expect full performance in that setup.
With the Home app, you can easily and securely control all your HomeKit accessories. HomeKit devices link up to each other with relatively little effort and can be controlled not only via an app but also with your voice via Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri. The Home app makes all your connected devices work smarter.
The Home app in iOS 10 lets you securely control any "Works with Apple HomeKit” accessory. Leading worldwide brands offer accessories that are compatible with HomeKit and your Apple devices. you’ll only need to add a 4th generation Apple TV—which acts as a hub and gateway—to control your devices when you’re not on your home Wi-Fi network. And since all communication is encrypted and takes place locally on your devices—nothing needs to be managed in the cloud.
So these are the just basic features I covered in this post. I will try to elaborate specific issues regarding Apple HomeKit in my future posts.
