Microsoft enters into the real laptop market with the announcement of Surface Laptop
After releasing many devices under the brand name of 'Surface', today Microsoft takes a step further and dive into the proper laptop genre with the unveiling of Microsoft Surface Laptop. The Surface Laptop has a non-detachable 13.5” PixelSense display with touch and stylus support. And following the footsteps set by LG and Samsung for ditching long lasting aspect ratio of 16:9, this display has 3:2 aspect ratio, having 2,256 x 1,504 pixels to be precise.
One of the talking feature of Surface Laptop is it uses a fabric alcantara backlit keyboard, which we first saw in Surface Pro 4 keyboard. The laptop weighs just 1.25kg and measures 14.5mm at its thickest point while 9.9mm at its thinnest. It has a standard USB 3.0 port, mini DisplayPort, a headphones socket and Microsoft’s proprietary power connector which allows it to dock with existing Surface accessories. What's interesting here is the absence of USB type C port, which is rather common in mobile and laptop world.
Microsoft has also launched Windows 10 S, a new stripped-down version of Windows 10, aimed at the education market. As it runs Windows 10 S, the only apps available will be from the Windows Store unless you opt to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. But by taking this road, Microsoft intelligently cut the costs down and at the same time ready to take apart the success of Google’s popular sub $300 Chromebooks and Apple’s premium MacBook Pro. It will be available in Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue and Graphite Gold. Preorders for the new system start today, and it will be available from June 15. A Core i5 model with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD will start at $999. The fully loaded model - i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD - will cost you $2,200.
