HTC U11 is official with UltraPixel 3 camera Snapdragon 835 - its squeezable too
HTC just announced its newest smartphone today, the U11, a member of the new 'U' family and the successor to the HTC 10 from last year. The HTC U11 has a 5.5-inch, Quad HD display with latest gorilla glass 5 protection, Snapdragon 835 processor, and new glass and metal design. The phone comes with two notable features: a fancy "squeeze" function that launches a configurable action and dual hotword support for both the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Surely 'Squeezing is a new type of interaction that HTC rather ambitiously hopes will find a place in history somewhere alongside the likes of the computer mouse and the touchscreen.
Edge Sense will let you trigger a number of functions. For example, you can launch the camera and take a photo without hitting any buttons—just hug your phone. Edge Sense is also tied into voice-to-text, so you can squeeze to transcribe your voice and reply to messages without laying a finger on the screen. App shortcuts can be bound to Edge Sense as well. The U11 is also rated for IP67 water and dust resistance.
HTC has upgraded its back 12-megapixel shooter — now dubbed an "UltraPixel 3" camera — with faster autofocus and an f/1.7 lens, and enhanced HDR capabilities thanks to the always-on HDR Boost feature. Slow motion video can be captured in 1080p at 120fps. The selfie snapper is higher-res, interestingly, coming in at 16 MP. It records 1080p Full HD video and has a Selfie Panorama mode.
U11 also have 4 microphones to provide 3D audio recording. The handset is Hi-Res Audio certified, and comes with BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition. This means that the earpiece acts as one speaker, set up as a tweeter, while the speaker on the bottom takes care of the bass.
HTC U11 usually comes with a 4GB/64GB combination while some regions will have the privilege of having a 6GB/128GB model. Both versions offer a microSD slot for up to 2TB of extra storage. The phone lacks a headphone jack, but the Type-C to 3.5mm adapter is included. HTC says removing the headphone jack has a number of advantages, including allowing the company more room inside the phone for other components and making the design of the bottom edge smoother. It also allows for a better audio experience, as the included headphones have both audio tuning and active noise cancellation.
The U11 will launch with Android 7.1 Nougat with HTC Sense. HTC is joining with Sprint in the US as the exclusive carrier partner for the U11, and it is available for preorder now and will be hitting stores on June 9th. You can pick it up for $29 per month for two years ($696 total). Those that preorder the phone will get two Amazon Echo Dots for free. An unlocked version compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon is also available for preorder from htc.com and Amazon for $649 and will be shipping in June. In the UK, it's £649 SIM-free from Amazon, Very.co.uk, Argos, and will also be available at Carphone Warehouse, EE and O2.
