Microsoft Offers Low Cost Windows 7 Upgrade

When you buy your copy of Windows 7 it actually includes all versions of Windows 7 on the disc. When you buy Windows 7 Home Premium, you get a disc with Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate but you only get a product key for Windows 7 Home Premium. So when you install Windows 7 Home Premium, you actually have the features of Professional and Ultimate installed, but they are disabled since you haven’t got the required product key.

Unknown to most of us, we can actually purchase an upgrade that will allow us to access these additional features. A feature called Windows Anytime Upgrade lets users buy a code and unlock the new features, a process that Microsoft says can be done in just 10 minutes.

However to date, not many people are aware of this feature so Microsoft are beginning a promotion from this Sunday. Certain retailers will be offering those buying a new PC the opportunity to buy a discounted upgrade to a higher-end version of Windows 7 when they purchase a new PC.

In the U.S., there are two offers, though not all retailers will be offering both. Firstly those buying a PC with Windows 7 Starter (the version found on most Netbooks) will be able to upgrade from that version to Windows 7 Home Premium for $49, which usually costs $79. The second offer will allow users to upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional for $79 as compared to the usual $89. Microsoft said on the Windows Team Blog that this offer will run for a limited time only and will end on the 3rd of July.

This push by Microsoft is try and make sure small businesses get the version of Windows 7 they want as many small businesses buy their PC’s at retail and don’t always have the option to choose the version of Windows they want.
