LG GW990 4.8" Display Smartphone With Intel's Moorestwon CPU Preview
The LG GW990 was the star of the company keynote speech at CES this year. The full-touch device makes a brave attempt at resurrecting the MID class of devices by introducing specs well beyond the reach of any contemporary smartphone. The upcoming LG Electronics GW990 smartphone looks, and feels, like it could be a real hit when it finally gets to the market in the second half of the year.Probably the largest screen of any mobile phone ever, the LG GW990 has been developed by Intel and LG as the vanguard of the next generation of smartphones. The 4.8" 1024 x 480 pixel display is the most immediately obvious feature of the LG GW990, and a consequence this is a really big device, it looks to be about 6 inches long and 2.5 inches wide, making it longer than any smartphone You've seen or used before.
Notably, the GW990 will run on the second-generation Atom-based 45nm Moorestown processor. Kedia said Moorestown will help support 720p high-definition video in 3D on the phone's 4.8-inch diagonal screen with an aspect ratio of 2.13 to 1, which gave a striking image when played a video clip from the movie Avatar. Kedia showed how the phone, when used in landscape mode, can be a suitable movie player.(It's not quite five inches as some reports have indicated.)
The LG GW990 runs the Moblin operating system, a product of the Linux Foundation. Moblin is pitched at products from netbooks to what they call "mobile internet devices", so it is aimed at that market segment between (say) Android on smartphones and Ubuntu on full-blown PCs.
Moblin has been around for long enough to get to version 2.1, but the Mobile Garage (their equivalent of an App Store) has just 51 applications in at present. However, those applications do include sophisticated things like AbiWord for word processing, Firefox, the GIMP graphics program and FreeCiv which is a strategy game.
Even though the GW990 seems good at multi-tasking, Kedia said Intel has not released the clock speed on the Moorestown processor. His reluctance to talk about chip speed left me wondering whether it's below 1GHz, the speed offered by the Snapdragon processor in the new Nexus One. The high network data transfer rates are assured by 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 5.76Mbps HSUPA. Although this is a 3.5G HSPA device, LG say that the GW990 platform can be extended to include 4G technologies such as LTE, although this obviously would be a different hardware variant.
An extra effort has been done to create a handset that is really power-efficient, consuming 10 times less electricity than last year's Atom chipsets. That should help the 1850 mAh battery last for quite a while even with a screen of this caliber. There is no information about the availability or the pricing of the LG GW990 just yet but we suppose it to release sometime during the second half of 2010, we expect to see further details from LG on specifications perhaps as early as next month.
